The fire alarm system is now disabled and will be so until the new fire alarm panel is installed and tested either Wednesday or Thursday next week (Sept. 3 or 4). Smoke and Carbon monoxide alarms will still function in the individual units and in the common areas.
During this period when the fire alarm system is down, please be a bit more attentive. If you detect smoke anywhere in the building check it out if it appears safe to do so, but if you are not sure of your safety call 911. Once your make that call and if it appears safe to do so, raise the alarm in the building by knocking very loudly on doors, and if appropriate yelling, “FIRE”. Then exit the building and wait for the fire department.
There will be fire watch patrols during this period circulating a prescribed route once per hour, 24 hours a day. In the evenings, 7PM to 7AM a contract security guard will be in the building doing the fire watch patrols. During the day some of the the patrols will be done by KOP resident volunteers; other patrols will be done by a contract security guard.
When the security guard is on duty it is likely you will see them sitting in the lobby, as this will be their station except for when doing the hourly patrol. It is possible you may find this person asleep–this is acceptable as their prime duty is to do the hourly patrol, which takes about 15 minutes. Please be courteous.
Thank you to the residents who have already volunteered for fire watch shifts. If anyone else is interested please sign up at KOP Fire Watch Shift. The shifts are for 6 hours but can be split with a neighbour. Each patrol takes less than 15 minutes.
